## Key points

- Maine Democrats unite behind Troy Jackson after rivals withdraw.
- Jackson faces Republican Senator Susan Collins.
- Avoiding a divisive replacement contest may aid Democrats.

## Summary

Maine Democrats have avoided an internal contest to replace former Senate nominee Graham Platner, allowing the party to rally behind former state Senate President Troy Jackson. The development matters because it removes a potential distraction as Democrats try to unseat Republican Senator Susan Collins.

Jackson secured an overwhelming majority of delegate slots, after which his principal rivals withdrew and urged party unity. Collins is seeking a sixth term in the Senate, making the race a difficult target for Democrats despite their relief at resolving the nomination dispute.
