A capybara that escaped from Marwell Zoo in Hampshire nearly six months ago has been confirmed alive after zookeepers verified a photograph taken on 11 August as the missing animal, Samba. The sighting is the first confirmed evidence of her whereabouts since she vanished from her enclosure on 17 March while being moved with another capybara, and marks the most promising lead yet in an extensive search that had otherwise turned up nothing. The case has drawn considerable public interest, with the search becoming something of an online phenomenon.

Samba disappeared during an enclosure transfer and has evaded capture for almost half a year, prompting numerous reported sightings and a wave of jokey, often AI-generated images imagining her life on the run. Marwell Zoo has not disclosed where the confirmed photo was taken or whether it has helped locate her since. Experts note capybaras could plausibly survive in the British countryside thanks to abundant vegetation and a lack of natural predators, though Samba faces risks from traffic and, being a social species usually living in groups of 20 to 100, potential stress from isolation as winter approaches.
