On This Day in 1998, Vince Gill Returned to His Roots With an Album of Pure Country and Emotionally Powerful Songwriting
On 11 August 1998, country star Vince Gill released his eighth studio album, The Key, which went on to become his first to top the country album chart. The record marked a deliberate return to traditional country sounds, as Gill sought to move away from the pop-leaning country dominating radio at the time, and he wrote or co-wrote all 13 tracks himself.
All four singles from the album reached the country top 40, though only "If You Ever Have Forever in Mind" cracked the top 10, peaking at No. 5, reflecting Gill's focus on artistic authenticity over chart success. He enlisted respected musicians including pianist Hargus "Pig" Robbins, guitarist Randy Scruggs and steel guitarist John Hughey, and closed the record with "The Key to Life", a tribute to his father Stan, who had died the previous year. Speaking earlier this year to Charlie Worsham, Gill affirmed that this pure country style remains the music closest to his heart.
