## Key points

- Video game adaptations have improved significantly in recent years, with Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) overcoming early design criticism to become a major commercial success
- The film, which received audience backlash prompting a character redesign before release, now appears in streaming platform charts five years after its debut
- Sonic spawned multiple sequels, spin-offs, and a television series, cementing its status as one of the most successful video game adaptations

## Summary

Video game film adaptations have moved beyond a legacy of poor quality to achieve genuine critical and commercial momentum. Sonic the Hedgehog experienced an unusual path to success: when promotional trailers showcased the protagonist's initial design, widespread audience disapproval forced a significant character redesign before the film's 2020 release, bucking the trend of adaptations ignoring fan concerns.

The redesigned film became one of the year's highest-grossing releases and has since generated two sequels with a third in development, along with a television spin-off. Five years after its theatrical run, the movie has resurfaced on streaming platforms, currently ranking eighth in Pluto TV's most-watched films across the United States, positioned between entries in the Transformers franchise.
