## Key points

- Three films rival The Lord of the Rings for entertainment.
- Character choices give their action emotional weight.
- Each story ends with hard-won change.

## Summary

The article argues that three films deliver an especially gripping, emotionally grounded adventure, even in far less time than the three-film journey of The Lord of the Rings. Raiders of the Lost Ark, Terminator 2: Judgment Day and Mad Max: Fury Road keep their action engaging by making the characters’ choices and relationships matter.

In Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones’s ingenuity is balanced by his bad luck, while Marion’s resilience and Indy’s care for her give the spectacle a human centre. Terminator 2 pairs its chases with John’s rule against killing and the Terminator’s gradual understanding of care and sacrifice. In Fury Road, Furiosa’s rescue plan changes when the Green Place is lost, and the return to the Citadel brings a tangible result: Joe’s defeat and water for its people.
