OpenAI releases a new ChatGPT tool for all things work related
OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Work, a general-purpose productivity agent that represents the biggest step yet towards the desktop "super app" it has been developing publicly since March. The tool brings ChatGPT, the Codex coding agent and a built-in web browser together in one redesigned application, matters because it signals OpenAI's push to position ChatGPT as an all-in-one assistant for demanding work tasks rather than just a chatbot.
ChatGPT Work is powered by OpenAI's new GPT-5.6 model family, whose release was briefly delayed by the Trump administration. It supports task scheduling, so users can set the agent working from their phone and track progress later via the web or desktop app, and it can use built-in computer-use capabilities to carry out actions across apps and move files. A new unified plugin directory lets users connect apps by typing "@" followed by an app name, while a feature called Sites can generate web apps such as dashboards and trackers. OpenAI says it will discontinue its Atlas browser, targeting 9 August for deprecation. The rollout begins today and is expected to complete within 24 hours, with free users able to try the agent via the Mac and Windows desktop app, and Plus and Pro subscribers also able to use it through the web client.
