Opera’s new security feature stops copy paste attacks from malicious websites

Engadget · 6 days ago

Opera has introduced a new browser security tool designed to counteract a threat vector that dominated malware delivery last year. The feature, called Paste Protect, intercepts malicious clipboard operations before they can compromise user systems, making Opera the first major browser to offer native protection against this specific attack class.

The attacks it guards against typically exploit users through fake security prompts that covertly copy harmful code to the clipboard, then instruct them via keystrokes to execute it. Opera's solution automatically detects and blocks such operations whilst alerting users through a red address bar indicator, and includes provisions for false positives. Protection covers threats targeting all three major operating systems and is now rolling out to Opera users with configurable settings.

  • Opera launches Paste Protect, native defense against ClickFix clipboard attacks that accounted for over 50% of 2025 malware infections
  • Feature detects and blocks malicious copy operations across Windows, macOS, and Linux; alerts users with red address bar icon
