Oscar-winning Irish musician Glen Hansard has died aged 56 after a motorbike crash in Dublin, with his management and Taoiseach Micheál Martin among those paying tribute to the singer-songwriter and actor. Hansard rose from busking on Dublin's streets to international acclaim, fronting rock band The Frames, appearing in The Commitments as Outspan Foster, and winning an Academy Award for Best Original Song for "Falling Slowly" from the film Once.

The single-vehicle crash happened on Lower Road in Lucan, west of Dublin, and was reported to emergency services shortly before 04:30 local time, with police now appealing for witnesses. Hansard's management, ATC Management, said his family was "deeply shocked and heartbroken" and thanked the emergency services who attended, while Martin described him as a musician who "made a significant contribution to Ireland's cultural landscape". Beyond his Oscar win, Hansard formed The Swell Season with Once co-star Markéta Irglová, released the Grammy-nominated album Didn't He Ramble, and saw a Broadway adaptation of Once win eight Tony Awards. He was born in Dublin in 1970 and is survived by his three-year-old son.
