Ireland has selected the Irish-language thriller Aontas as its submission for the best international feature film category at the 2027 Oscars. The choice gives the film a chance to compete for an Academy Award and continues Ireland’s recent prominence in the category following The Quiet Girl’s nomination and Kneecap’s shortlist appearance.

Directed by Damian McCann and co-written with Sarah Gordon, Aontas follows three unlikely thieves after a rural Credit Union robbery goes wrong, using reverse chronology to explore its central character’s past. The film stars Carrie Crowley, Bríd Brennan and Eva-Jane Gaffney, was filmed over 18 days in the Glens of Antrim, and was backed by TG4, BBC Gaeilge, Northern Ireland Screen and Yellowmoon; The Quiet Girl remains the only Irish-language film nominated in this Oscar category.
