Oscars: Taiwan Selects ‘A Foggy Tale’ for International Feature Race
Taiwan has selected "A Foggy Tale," directed by Chen Yu-hsun, as its submission for the best international feature film category at the 99th Academy Awards. The film was chosen by majority vote from seven domestic entries, with Taiwan's Ministry of Culture praising its vivid characters and portrayal of ordinary people during a pivotal era, while reflecting both Taiwanese identity and universal themes. The selection matters as Taiwan continues its long-running Oscar campaign, having only secured three nominations in the category since 1957, all under director Ang Lee.
Set in 1953 during the White Terror era, the film follows a teenage girl travelling from Chiayi City to Taipei to retrieve her brother's body after his execution by the Kuomintang government. It dominated last year's Golden Horse Awards with 11 nominations, winning four prizes including best narrative feature, and also took five awards at the Taipei Film Awards, having already screened at festivals in Italy, Hong Kong, San Diego and Singapore. The 99th Academy Awards ceremony is scheduled for 14 March 2027.
