## Key points

- The Academy says Oscars will continue to reward human-led work.
- Six major festival awards now offer a route to international feature eligibility.
- Academy leaders say the rules will be reviewed each year.

## Summary

The Academy’s leaders say the Oscars will continue to recognise human-led filmmaking as artificial intelligence becomes more common in production. They also expect to review the international feature eligibility rules after introducing a new route that allows some films to qualify through major festival awards.

AI has been used in post-production and visual effects for years, but Academy president Lynette Howell Taylor cited copyright, transparency and disclosure as continuing concerns. Under rules for the 99th Oscars, films can qualify by winning the top prize at one of six festivals, including Cannes, Berlin and Venice; the committee will review the rules each year. The Academy says the changes, alongside a rule for filmmakers seeking asylum outside their home countries, are intended to broaden access for international films.
