Ospreys have challenged the Welsh Rugby Union’s plan to reduce the number of professional men’s teams from four to three by 2028, arguing that four sustainable clubs would provide a stronger future for Welsh rugby. The proposal puts Ospreys and Scarlets in direct competition for the single west Wales regional licence, while Cardiff and Dragons are expected to receive licences.

The WRU will begin deciding the framework for the final licence in December, with a conclusion due before the end of the 2026-27 season. Ospreys say they are building momentum through a planned move to the redeveloped St Helen’s ground in Swansea, backed by £5.1m from Swansea Council and £2.5m from owners Y11 Sports & Media, alongside further investment in the squad and facilities.
