## Key points

- Demolition began at Houston’s century-old Kirby Mansion.
- The home had no historic designation.
- Its future may be a petrol station and shop.

## Summary

Demolition crews began dismantling the century-old Kirby Mansion in Houston, prompting anger from locals and preservation advocates. The 20,000-square-foot Tudor Revival home was among the last remnants of the old South End neighbourhood, and its loss has renewed concerns about the city’s ability to protect historic buildings.

The mansion had no historic designation, and records showed only a sewer-disconnection permit had been issued, while asbestos removal was scheduled through 6 November. Demolition stopped part-way through on Friday for reasons that remain unclear; a preservation group suspects permission may have been lacking. The property was recently bought by OB Texas Properties LLC, and permits suggest it could become a petrol station and convenience store.
