## Key points

- 22 dogs, including eight puppies, were rescued in El Rio.
- The dogs are now in the care of Ventura County Animal Services.
- The over-capacity shelter has waived adoption fees.

## Summary

Twenty-two dogs, including eight puppies, were rescued from an encampment in El Rio, Southern California, after police reported that they were roaming close to a busy road. Ventura County Animal Services and Dog Days Search and Rescue secured the animals and took them to a shelter, where they can receive care and eventually be considered for adoption.

Officials said the dogs had also strayed onto private property and disrupted nearby oil field operations. The shelter is over capacity and has waived adoption fees; four adult female dogs were already available for adoption in a follow-up post. Before adoption, the dogs will be spayed or neutered, vaccinated, treated for fleas and microchipped, and the shelter says they will need patience as they settle in.
