Pamplona bull run leaves three men in hospital as San Fermín festival opens

Daily Mail · 17 hours ago

At least three people were taken to hospital on the first proper day of Pamplona's Running of the Bulls, part of the San Fermín festival in northern Spain. The event sees runners deliberately sprint in front of six fighting bulls, led by six steers, along a half-mile course through the city's old town, and injuries are a regular occurrence at one of Europe's best-known and most controversial spectacles.

The three men taken to hospital were a 61-year-old American with a head injury described as not serious, a 20-year-old from Segovia with a leg injury, and a 34-year-old from Biscay with an ankle injury. A fourth person was treated at the scene and a fifth received minor medical attention, with no goring injuries reported. Separately, a man thought to be around 70 collapsed and died of a suspected cardiac arrest in a bar on Estafeta Street, part of the route, late the previous night; his death is currently being linked to natural causes. The morning's run lasted two minutes and 16 seconds.

  • At least three men hospitalised on the opening run in Pamplona.
  • Injuries included head, leg and ankle trauma, but no gorings.
  • A man of about 70 died separately of a suspected cardiac arrest.
