The parents and sister of 23-year-old Marco Tapia have spoken publicly about the moment they discovered him shot dead in his bed, after masked intruders broke into the family's home in Glen Alpine, south-west Sydney, in an attack police believe may have targeted the wrong person. Mr Tapia, who had no criminal associations, was killed in what investigators suspect was a gang-related shooting gone wrong, leaving his parents and sister traumatised and his attackers still at large.

Three masked men entered the family's home on Mount Sugarloaf Drive at around 3.40am on 1 September and shot Mr Tapia in the neck and arm while his parents and sister slept nearby. Speaking to Channel Nine's A Current Affair, his mother Claudia and father Sergio described the scene as a "horrific nightmare," while his sister Cassie said she was devastated he would miss her wedding in November. A biomedical engineering student and church youth leader, Mr Tapia had been planning to propose to his long-term girlfriend; his family say they are seeking peace rather than revenge, though the gunmen remain on the run a fortnight after the killing.
