## Key points

- Stewart’s final expected screen role is in Avengers: Doomsday.
- His Professor X helped anchor the X-Men films.
- Logan may have been the farewell the character deserved.

## Summary

Patrick Stewart’s death, announced on 29 October, has made his appearance in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday feel like a more poignant final screen role. The article argues that while the film may not give Professor X the farewell he deserves, Stewart’s return matters because his warm, empathetic portrayal helped anchor the X-Men films and shape modern superhero cinema.

Doomsday, due in December, is expected to bring together Marvel and former Fox characters, including Stewart’s Professor X and Ian McKellen’s Magneto, though their roles remain unclear. Stewart’s character has died on screen before, including in X-Men: The Last Stand and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness; Logan had already offered a powerful, ageing version of Xavier that many saw as a fitting conclusion.
