## Key points

- Picard’s defining quote is about treasuring the present.
- “The Inner Light” lets him live decades as Kamin.
- The episode centres empathy, memory and a life lost.

## Summary

The article argues that Picard’s most defining line is his quiet advice in “The Inner Light”: “Seize the time... Live now. Make now always the most precious time. Now will never come again.” It says the moment captures the compassion and empathy that made Patrick Stewart’s character central to Star Trek, beyond his familiar commands.

In the 1992 episode, an ancient probe makes Picard experience decades as Kamin, a man on a dying planet who builds a family and learns to play the ressikan flute. Though only about 25 minutes pass aboard the Enterprise, Picard returns carrying memories of a whole life and a lost civilisation; the flute remains as a reminder that, to him, Kataan felt like home.
