## Key points

- Hanson's appeal against racial discrimination finding dismissed by court
- Stemmed from 2022 "piss off back to Pakistan" remark to Faruqi
- Original ruling against Hanson remains in place

## Summary

Pauline Hanson has lost her Federal Court challenge against a racial discrimination finding made after she told Greens Senator Mehreen Faruqi to "piss off back to Pakistan". The One Nation leader had argued the ruling stifled free speech, but the court upheld the original decision, confirming that her comments breached racial discrimination laws and cannot be shielded as legitimate political debate.

The dispute stemmed from a 2022 exchange in which Hanson made the remark after Faruqi, who was born in Pakistan, made comments regarding the death of Queen Elizabeth II. A tribunal had earlier found Hanson's response amounted to unlawful racial discrimination, and her subsequent appeal to overturn that finding has now been rejected, leaving the original ruling against her intact.
