PBS, BBC Set New ‘Nova’ Evolution Science Series Tracing ‘The Epic Journey of Life’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Variety · 4 hours ago

Public Broadcasting Service and the British Broadcasting Corporation are collaborating on a new documentary series examining the scientific evidence for evolutionary change across billions of years. Produced by GBH's documentary unit alongside BBC Studios, the programme will air for five consecutive weeks and explore how the vast diversity of life visible today descended from much simpler ancestral forms, using fossil records, genetic studies, and modern visualisation techniques to illustrate these transformations.

Each episode focuses on different aspects of evolutionary history, ranging from the development of complex brains in marine mammals to the origins of reproductive strategies and animal locomotion. The production features interviews with scientists and employs photography and computer animation to depict evolutionary processes and extinct organisms, making abstract biological concepts accessible to general audiences through specific, detailed examples of how structural features have changed over time.

  • PBS and BBC are launching a five-part documentary series called 'Nova: Evolution' beginning October 14, 2026
  • The series traces life's development from single-celled organisms to modern species using genetic analysis, fossils, and animation
