Peacock’s adaptation of *Dungeon Crawler Carl* faces the challenge of preserving the books’ blend of irreverent humour and emotional depth. The article argues that Princess Donut, a talking cat, is central to achieving this balance because she provides much of the comedy while also serving as the story’s emotional heart.

Donut’s relationship with Carl drives much of his character development, with their separations, reunions and efforts to protect each other revealing the series’ deeper themes. The television version must portray her trauma, growth and increasing power convincingly, while avoiding reducing her to comic relief; casting audiobook narrator Jeff Hays is presented as an encouraging early decision, although live-action may make the character’s expressive and darker moments harder to depict than animation would.
