BBC Sport · 1 month ago

Pelé’s shirt from the 1958 World Cup final has sold for $4.9m (£3.6m) at a Sotheby’s auction in New York, making it the second most valuable football shirt ever sold. The sale underlines the enduring commercial and cultural significance of Pelé’s breakthrough performance, when he scored twice for Brazil against Sweden aged 17.

The shirt attracted 10 bids from more than five bidders and far exceeded its 2004 sale price of $105,600 (£70,505). Only Diego Maradona’s Argentina shirt from the 1986 ‘Hand of God’ match has sold for more, at £7.1m in 2022; other auction items included Maradona’s captain’s armband for £380,000 and shirts worn by Lionel Messi and David Beckham.
