## Summary

Archive of Our Own (AO3), a major fan-fiction website, has temporarily shut down after a security incident, leaving readers sharing downloaded stories and links as makeshift guides. The outage highlights how central the site has become to fan communities and to a wider entertainment industry that draws on fan fiction.

An update posted on 29 October said service could take up to four weeks to return fully, though some features might come back sooner in a degraded state. AO3 says it does not believe its user database was stolen, but has urged users to change their passwords as it investigates. Run by the nonprofit Organization for Transformative Works, the site has 11 million users and hosts more than 18 million works.
