Peter Jackson-produced sci-fi film District 9 is heading to free ad-supported streaming, more than 15 years after its release, coinciding with renewed talk of a long-mooted sequel. The 2009 film, directed by Neill Blomkamp and based on his South African short film, became a critical and commercial word-of-mouth hit, and its move to a no-cost platform gives new audiences an easy way to revisit or discover it.

District 9 grossed over $210 million worldwide against a reported budget of around $30 million and earned four Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, at a time when the Academy had just expanded that category to accommodate mainstream blockbusters alongside Avatar. Acclaimed for using its science-fiction premise to explore South Africa's apartheid era, the film is now set to become available on Pluto TV, the free streaming service, this August.
