Phil Collins has revealed he came close to dying from alcohol abuse in April 2024, when he was hospitalised and briefly unconscious, prompting his manager to call his five children to his bedside amid fears he would not survive. The Genesis frontman told the Sunday Times magazine that doctors were considering whether to keep him on life support as his kidneys and other organs began to fail, though he has no memory of the visits from family and friends who feared they might be saying goodbye.

Collins spent seven months in hospital and says he has not had a drink since being discharged, but the damage from years of alcoholism, which he first documented in his 2016 autobiography, remains severe: his pancreas is scarred and his kidneys barely function. He also has type 2 diabetes, nerve damage that prevents him holding drumsticks, and now requires crutches following back and knee surgeries, along with a full-time live-in nurse. Despite this, he described himself as "very lucky" and recalled a particularly meaningful few days with his family at the end of last year, including an emotional moment with his daughter, actress Lily Collins.
