## Key points

- Democrats gained control of the Senate and House.
- Historic firsts included a Black female governor and Muslim senator.
- Voters cited costs, tariffs and higher fuel prices.

## Summary

Democrats won control of both chambers of the US Congress in Tuesday’s election, a major setback for President Donald Trump that is expected to constrain the final two years of his term. Their gains give the opposition greater ability to block legislation, investigate his administration and challenge judicial and senior government appointments.

The election also produced several historic firsts: the first Black female governor, openly gay male senator, Muslim senator and female Native American governor. The results came amid public anger over rising living costs, tariffs and Trump’s confrontation with Iran, which has pushed up fuel prices.
