The Guardian · 1 hour ago

Phyllida Law, the Scottish-born actor known for a prolific eight-decade career across stage, television and film, has died at home aged 94, according to her personal manager, who said she "died supremely peacefully" surrounded by family. She was equally at home in comedy, musicals and drama, and became especially well known for appearing alongside her daughters, Emma and Sophie Thompson, in several acclaimed productions.

Born in Glasgow in 1932, Law trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, where she met actor Eric Thompson, whom she married in 1957 and who died in 1982. Her career spanned TV roles from the late 1950s in shows such as Dr Finlay's Casebook, prominent stage work opposite Alec Guinness and with the National Theatre, and later film successes including Peter's Friends, Much Ado About Nothing, Emma and The Winter Guest, many alongside her daughters. She continued working into recent decades on shows including Doc Martin, Poirot and Kingdom, with her final screen role in 2020's Then Came You. She is survived by Emma and Sophie Thompson.
