A single-decker electric London bus crashed into the front of an Edwardian house at 73 St Quintin Avenue in Notting Hill last Thursday evening, sending debris flying and destroying the living room of a ground-floor flat. The elderly couple who live there — a 75-year-old woman and her 82-year-old husband — have been left homeless by the collision, though both escaped injury because they were out having dinner at a nearby pub when it happened.

The resident, who asked not to be named, said she counted herself "lucky" to have been away, noting that her husband usually sits in an armchair by the window and that rubble covered the settee where she would normally sit. She learned of the incident when her sister and a neighbour rang to say something had happened and urged her to return home immediately. Images of the aftermath show rubble and a broken window frame strewn across the ground outside the house, which has been divided into three flats.
