The family of Simon Gettings, a 55-year-old father-of-two killed when his delivery van was struck by a train at a level crossing in Burscough, West Lancashire, have paid tribute to him, saying he will be missed "more than words can say". He was pronounced dead at the scene on Saturday afternoon, while two train passengers were treated for minor injuries; British Transport Police have launched an investigation into the incident.

Mr Gettings' family described him as a devoted husband and loving father who was also a respected teacher in Southport, Liverpool and Blackpool, and who had recently cared for both his parents through dementia. He had taken early retirement to spend more time with his family and was remembered as a keen reader with a strong sense of humour and justice. The train remained at the scene for more than a day, with services on the line suspended while investigations continued.
