A 42-year-old flying instructor, Leandro Bertazzo, died after deliberately jumping from a light aircraft mid-flight while giving a lesson to a 22-year-old student near Córdoba, in central Argentina, on 4 July 2026. His father has since said his son had been going through "a difficult time", and the flight school's director revealed that Bertazzo had attended a psychiatric consultation the week before his death. The case has drawn attention both for its unusual and distressing circumstances and for the student pilot who was left to bring the plane down alone.

Bertazzo took off from Coronel Olmedo Airport in a Cessna C-150 and, according to his employer, removed his headphones, arranged his belongings, unfastened his seatbelt, opened the difficult-to-open door and jumped, telling the student: "You know what to do, keep moving forward." His body was found in a field around 20 minutes later, in an area the student had marked out. The student pilot managed to land the aircraft unaided back at the airport and alert the authorities. Bertazzo, who described himself as a former commercial pilot in Chile, had worked at the Flying Parrot Córdoba school for four years, was single with no children and lived with his parents; investigators are continuing to look into his death.
