Pitbull concert forces historic Champions League qualifier in Lithuania to move

The Guardian · 23 hours ago

FK Kauno Zalgiris, Lithuania's champions, will likely be forced to play a historic Champions League second qualifying round tie away from their home stadium because they had already rented the venue out for a concert by US rapper Pitbull. The club reached this stage after beating Kosovo's Drita 4-3 on aggregate, securing around €1.7m in prize money, but the scheduling clash means a rare European home fixture will probably be relocated, drawing criticism from the team's coach and Lithuania's football federation.

Zalgiris are due to play away to Faroese champions KI, with the return leg scheduled for 28 or 29 July, the same window as their 15,000-seater Darius and Girenas Stadium's booking for Pitbull's 31 July show. Attempts to swap the fixture order were blocked by Faroese national holidays and policing constraints from another European tie in the islands, meaning Zalgiris will likely instead play in Jonava, a town 30km away with a stadium holding just over 2,500 people. Club chair Mantas Kalnietis defended the decision, citing the concert's financial benefit, while head coach Zeljko Sopic and LFF president Edgaras Stankevicius voiced frustration at the disruption to a significant European occasion.

  • Zalgiris rented their stadium to Pitbull, clashing with a Champions League qualifier
  • Team likely to play at a 2,500-capacity ground in Jonava instead
  • Win over KI would send Lithuania's champions into the group stage
