## Key points

- £7m is planned for a study of a Northern Games.
- The study will assess costs, venues and transport.
- A possible bid could target the 2040s.

## Summary

The government plans to announce £7m for a full feasibility study into hosting Olympic and Paralympic Games across northern England, with a possible bid for the 2040s. The study is the next step after an initial assessment and would examine whether a Northern Games could be delivered and whether a bid has a realistic chance of success.

The work will consider venues, transport links, how cities might share events, community benefits and likely costs. Northern mayors and former Olympians have backed exploring the idea, and the study will involve government, UK Sport and the British Olympic and Paralympic organisations. London 2012 was estimated to have cost £8.9bn; a government report later claimed it generated £9.9bn in economic benefits, a figure questioned by some organisations.
