A US Coast Guard jet carrying Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin was forced to make an emergency landing at Washington's Ronald Reagan National Airport after losing an engine mid-flight. The pilot calmly radioed air traffic control to declare an emergency, and the aircraft landed safely with no injuries reported, before being inspected by airport fire and rescue crews. The incident has drawn attention to DHS's ageing aircraft fleet, which officials previously warned was overdue for replacement.

The jet involved was a C-37A, a military version of the Gulfstream V used to transport DHS and Coast Guard officials. The pilot reported 14 people on board and around two and a half hours of remaining fuel when declaring the emergency. Mullin publicly praised the pilots' professionalism afterwards, saying they told him it was the first time they had performed such a landing. DHS, under Kristi Noem, had previously flagged that its Gulfstream aircraft are over 20 years old and beyond their intended service life, citing safety concerns.
