Arizona realtor Arthur Layne Lundeen was duct-taped to his seat on an American Airlines flight from Dallas to Newark on 3 September after an outburst involving racial slurs and homophobic language. The pilot made an emergency landing at Baltimore-Washington International Airport in Maryland, where Lundeen was arrested and charged with second-degree assault and disorderly conduct. At his first court appearance, the judge warned him of consequences if he missed his upcoming trial, underscoring the serious repercussions for disruptive behaviour aboard aircraft.

Lundeen, 67, claimed to have no recollection of the incident and attributed his behaviour to consuming two screwdrivers before the altercation. He was released on his own recognisance owing to his lack of prior criminal history, with his trial scheduled for 19 October. According to Rabbi Jonathan Cahn, who was seated nearby, Lundeen became enraged during a discussion about religious beliefs and allegedly grabbed him by the throat, struck him, and damaged his laptop during the flight.
