Duane "Keffe D" Davis has been found guilty over the 1996 drive-by shooting that killed rapper Tupac Shakur, bringing resolution to one of hip-hop's most scrutinised murder cases nearly 30 years on. The verdict has renewed attention on the unsolved 1997 murder of Christopher "The Notorious B.I.G." Wallace, whose case has stalled despite decades of public fascination with the two artists' intertwined fates and the rivalry that came to define hip-hop's "East Coast vs West Coast" era.

Davis, a 63-year-old reputed Compton Crips gang leader, was arrested in 2023 after years of describing his role in Shakur's death to police, journalists and media outlets, including admitting he passed the murder weapon to his nephew, the alleged gunman Orlando Anderson. The shooting is widely attributed to retaliation for an assault on Anderson by Shakur's entourage in Las Vegas days earlier; the other men in the car that night have all since died. By contrast, Wallace, gunned down in Los Angeles in March 1997, has seen no equivalent breakthrough, with far fewer suspects or witnesses willing to speak on record about the killing.
