‘Pokémon’ Is Officially Changing Its Winning Formula

Collider · 2 hours ago

The Pokémon anime, which has run weekly since 1997, is reportedly set to abandon its long-running episodic format in favour of a shorter, seasonal structure once the franchise enters its 10th generation. According to a report citing leaker CentroLeaks, the current instalment, Pokémon Horizons: The Series, will be the last "weekly anime", with future series airing in fixed-length seasons instead — a significant shift for a show that has been a fixture of children's television for almost three decades. The Pokémon Company has not confirmed the claim.

The franchise's next generation, Pokémon Winds and Waves, is due next year, and the anime change is expected to accompany it. The original series followed Ash Ketchum and Pikachu across the first eight generations before Ash's story concluded in March 2023, with Horizons introducing new lead character Liko a month later for generation nine. If confirmed, the move would echo One Piece's own switch from a weekly episodic schedule to a seasonal one, which began with its Elbaph Arc.

  • Pokémon anime may drop its weekly format for a seasonal one.
  • Change reportedly tied to the franchise's upcoming 10th generation.
  • Horizons: The Series could be the last weekly instalment; unconfirmed by Pokémon Company.
