Police issue statement over death of Ann Widdecombe after murder arrest in Rotherham
Former politician Ann Widdecombe was discovered dead at her Haytor residence on Thursday morning, with police believing the fatal attack occurred the previous afternoon. A 28-year-old man was arrested in Rotherham shortly after 9pm on Saturday in connection with the death. Widdecombe had served as a Conservative MP since 1987 and later held roles with the Brexit Party and Reform UK, whilst also gaining public recognition through television appearances on entertainment programmes.
Police have stated they are not pursuing additional suspects and have found no evidence suggesting the killing was terrorism-related or motivated by politics, though investigators remain open to all possible motives. Senior officers urged the public to refrain from circulating speculation about the circumstances, noting the distress caused to Widdecombe's family and associates. Reform UK leader Nigel Farage visited the village to pay respects, and the party subsequently arranged round-the-clock security for its parliamentary members in response to the incident.
