A traditional northern working-class game, Knurr and Spell, is being revived near Barnsley for Yorkshire Day. The competition aims to preserve a pastime once popular among mining communities, offering a low-cost alternative to golf and cricket while reconnecting people with local sporting heritage.

The 2026 event will take place at Thurgoland cricket ground on 1 August, with play measured and umpired from 14:00 BST. Players launch a small ball into the air and strike it as far as possible using homemade or substitute sticks; the original equipment is now difficult to obtain. The revival began in 2024, supported by historian Boz Davison and former champions, and includes open, women’s and children’s categories.
