## Summary

Pope Leo XIV has landed in Uruguay, beginning a 12-day South American tour that had been in doubt after surgery to remove a cancerous tumour. He said he felt “fairly good” after the 13-hour flight from Rome and was convinced the trip should go ahead.

The 71-year-old pope is scheduled to visit Uruguay, Argentina and Peru. His three-day Uruguay programme includes a visit to a neighbourhood affected by gang violence and Masses in Paysandú and Florida, where tickets quickly ran out; doctors cleared him to travel after his 13 October operation, and the Vatican says he needs only standard care.
