Patina Miller has reflected on the death of her character Raquel Thomas in the series finale of Starz’s Power Book III: Raising Kanan, which ends after five seasons. She said she understood that Raquel’s death was necessary to complete Kanan Stark’s transformation into the character seen in the original Power, despite the sadness of leaving the role.

Miller said she trusted creator Sascha Penn’s vision and viewed Raquel’s fate as consistent with the consequences of her criminal life. Raquel, a drug queenpin and Kanan’s mother, had been portrayed as powerful but not invulnerable; Miller said the final season showed her in a raw and increasingly unstable state before she was killed by Jukebox.
