## Key points

- At least 16 people were killed and 32 injured.
- Collapsed homes and blocked roads are hampering rescue work.

## Summary

A magnitude seven earthquake struck Baqên County in Tibet’s Nagqu region on Thursday night, killing at least 16 people and injuring 32, according to Chinese state media reports. Authorities declared an emergency and sent rescue teams to the mountainous area, where damage and blocked roads are complicating access.

More than 300 homes reportedly collapsed and power was mostly cut off in the region. Rockfalls forced road closures, hindering rescue efforts. The quake comes less than two months after floods and landslides in Tibet and Nepal, triggered by a glacier collapse, killed at least 1,400 people; hundreds remain missing.
