‘Preaching as resistance’: Dem minister behind Satanist wedding now linked to anti-Trump sermon guide

Fox News · 3 hours ago

Iowa Democrat Sarah Trone Garriott — a Lutheran minister and state senator now running for a highly competitive US House seat — has been reported by Fox News to have contributed a chapter to a 2018 book called "Preaching as Resistance", which urged faith leaders to oppose President Donald Trump and his supporters from the pulpit. The story matters because it adds to Republican scrutiny of her record on religious and cultural issues in a race seen as pivotal to control of the narrowly held House.

Trone Garriott's chapter, "The Gospel of Resistance", was described as the first sermon she gave after Trump's 2016 win, an event the book associated with a slide towards "fascism" and "White supremacy". She is challenging for the Des Moines-area seat held by Republican Zach Nunn, rated a "toss-up" by the Cook Political Report, in a district Trump carried by over four points in 2024. Fox notes she has previously drawn attention for helping marry a Satanist couple, defending a Wiccan-led legislative prayer, and linking public displays of Christianity to political violence.
