Pregnant LA woman, 22, left brain dead after targeted shooting by ‘someone close to her family’
A 22-year-old pregnant woman was left brain dead after being shot in the head while sitting in a car in Canoga Park, Los Angeles, in an attack her family says was carried out by someone close to them. Adriana Jimenez and her sister, Maria Fernanda Jimenez, were targeted in an alleyway near their home on 23 August; Adriana's unborn baby, at 16 weeks' gestation, also died, while her sister was shot in the neck and left unable to speak but is expected to survive.
Walter Rodriguez Garcia, 30, who reportedly had a romantic relationship with another passenger in the car, was arrested last week and charged with three counts of attempted murder. Adriana Jimenez spent nine days on life support before being declared brain dead; she leaves behind a six-year-old daughter and had been due to celebrate her birthday, alongside a gender reveal for the pregnancy, on 11 September. Her family has launched a GoFundMe, raising almost $2,000 so far, to cover funeral costs and the possible repatriation of her body to El Salvador.
