Premier League referee Anthony Taylor has announced his immediate retirement, saying the "intense" pressure and "constant" scrutiny of top-level officiating prompted him to step away. The 47-year-old former prison officer built a 20-year career spanning 831 matches, and his exit ends one of English football's most prominent officiating tenures, which included major domestic and European finals as well as three World Cups. Pro Ref chief refereeing officer Howard Webb praised him as "a fantastic servant to the game" who was "repeatedly trusted to officiate in the biggest games."

Taylor joined the Football League list in 2006, was promoted to the Premier League in 2010, and went on to take charge of 432 top-flight games and 668 professional matches in England overall, including two FA Cup finals, the 2015 League Cup final and the 2018 Championship play-off final. Internationally he officiated 163 matches across 14 years on Fifa's list, taking in the 2022 World Cup and the 2020 and 2024 Euros, though he was dropped from contention for the 2022 World Cup final over political tensions between England and Argentina. His career also featured the halted Denmark-Finland Euro 2020 tie after Christian Eriksen's collapse, and the fallout from the 2023 Europa League final, after which Jose Mourinho branded him a "disgrace" and confronted him in a car park, leading to abuse that Taylor said affected his family.
