Prime Video Orders Australian Originals ‘Free Spirits: The Backpacker Poisonings,’ ‘Madness of Three’ and ‘The Test’ Season 4

Variety · 1 hour ago

Prime Video has commissioned three new Australian original productions, expanding its local content slate to 34 titles since 2019. The line-up includes two true-crime docuseries and a fourth season of cricket documentary "The Test," with all three set to launch from 2027, underlining Amazon MGM Studios' continued investment in local storytelling for both domestic and international audiences.

"Free Spirits: The Backpacker Poisonings" is a three-part series recounting how a night out in Laos in late 2024 killed six of eight backpackers, using survivor interviews and personal footage; "Madness of Three" is a five-part docuseries on the 2022 Wieambilla shootings in Queensland, in which the Train family killed two police officers and a neighbour amid apparent radicalisation. "The Test" season four will follow the Australian men's cricket team through tours of South Africa and India, the 150th Anniversary Test and the 2027 Ashes. The commissions join existing Australian Prime Video titles such as "Deadloch" and "The Narrow Road to the Deep North."
