The pairing matters because this version of Harley is a morally conflicted anti-hero rather than a straightforward villain, bringing her closer to Batman’s aim of confronting the city’s corruption.

The series returns on Friday, with Batman still early in his crime-fighting career and under pressure to dismantle Rupert Thorne’s criminal empire. The images show Batman overlooking a burning alley, standing with Harley above Gotham, and allowing her into the Bat Cave to examine his evidence board, implying a growing trust between them. Harley Quinn, voiced by Jamie Chung, is portrayed as psychiatrist Dr Harleen Quinzel by day and a violent punisher of Gotham’s powerful wrongdoers by night; Batman is voiced by Hamish Linklater.
