Prince Harry defeated in privacy lawsuit against Mail publisher

Deadline · 2 months ago

Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, has lost his high-profile privacy lawsuit against Associated Newspapers, the publisher of the Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday. He and fellow claimants, including Liz Hurley and Elton John, had accused the group of unlawful information gathering, alleging "abhorrent criminal activity and gross breaches of privacy". High Court judge Mr Justice Nicklin dismissed all the claims, ruling that the claimants had failed to prove their allegations.

The lawsuit had alleged practices such as commissioning people to listen to private telephone calls, paying police officials with corrupt links to private investigators, and impersonating individuals to obtain medical records. The judge dismissed every one of the 97 allegations, accepting the honesty of the journalists' evidence about how they sourced stories. Prince Harry, who was in the UK for the verdict and had given evidence earlier in the year, condemned the ruling as a "complete and obvious whitewash", while Associated Newspapers hailed it as an "overwhelming victory" for a free press and a vindication of the Mail's journalism.
