A stage musical adaptation of Prince's 1984 film "Purple Rain" will open on Broadway at the Majestic Theatre in 2027, with previews from 12 March and an official opening on 12 April. The announcement was made on the 42nd anniversary of the original film, which grossed nearly $100 million worldwide and spawned the multi-award-winning "Purple Rain" album. The production brings one of the most celebrated bodies of work in popular music to the Broadway stage, aiming to introduce Prince's music to a new generation of theatregoers.

The show, directed by Saheem Ali with a book by Peter Duchan, features more than 20 of Prince's hits, including "When Doves Cry" and "I Would Die 4 U", and follows a young Minneapolis musician known as "The Kid" as he navigates fame and his troubled past. Long-time Prince collaborators Bobby Z and Morris Hayes are serving as music advisers, and the musical previously had an out-of-town run in 2025 at the State Theatre in Minneapolis, Prince's home city. The original "Purple Rain" soundtrack won two Grammys, three American Music Awards, two Brit Awards and an Oscar, and spent 24 weeks at number one on the Billboard 200.
