Prince's 1984 film and album Purple Rain is being adapted into a stage musical that will make its Broadway debut next year, producer Orin Wolf has confirmed. The show, directed by Saheem Ali, brings the story to New York's theatre district following its world premiere in Minneapolis last year, marking a significant posthumous milestone for the late musician, who reportedly discussed the idea of a stage version during his lifetime but never began work on it before his death.

Preview performances at the Majestic Theatre are set to begin on 12 March, with opening night exactly one month later on 12 April; tickets go on sale in September. The musical features more than 20 of Prince's songs, including "When Doves Cry", "I Would Die 4 U" and "The Beautiful Ones", and is set in Minneapolis in 1984, following a young performer known as "The Kid" as he navigates fame and his troubled past. Casting for the Broadway run has not yet been announced, though the Minneapolis production starred Kris Kollins, Rachel Webb and Jared Howelton.
