A black silk evening dress worn by Princess Diana to a 1994 charity event is going up for auction at Sotheby's, with the sale marking the first time the garment has appeared at auction since the late princess sold dozens of her outfits in 1997. The dress became known as the "revenge dress" because Diana wore it on the same evening a television documentary aired in which the then-Prince Charles admitted to adultery during their marriage, and her striking appearance at the Serpentine Gallery came to symbolise her reclaiming control of her public image during a difficult period.

Sotheby's expects the strapless dress, designed by Christina Stambolian, to fetch up to $300,000 (£220,000) when it is auctioned on 9 December. The princess reportedly made a last-minute change into the dress, pairing it with a royal jewel, black clutch and black pumps; a vintage Jaguar she arrived in that night sold separately earlier this year for £66,250. Other items from Diana's wardrobe have fetched large sums at auction previously, including a black sheep jumper that sold for £920,000 in 2023.
